What is pultrusion process?

Pultrusion is a cost-effective processing technique of forming and manufacturing a continuous length of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) by pulling a mix of reinforced fibers and liquid resin through a heated die. The process results in products with a constant section, such as pipes, rods, beams, and other structural members. The process of pultrusion was invented in the early 1950s and, since then, it has been widely used in different industries, such as automotives, aerospace, and construction, as a replacement for traditional materials such as steel, aluminum, and wood.
Today, FRP composites are still becoming an increasingly popular material choice in many industries, and the demand for pultruded FRP products is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. The resin-bath pultrusion (RBP) and resin-injection pultrusion (RIP) processes are the most common ways of producing FRP products. The latter is common for products that require complex shapes, such as pipes, tanks, and ducts.
Pultruded products are often used in applications that require high strength, stiffness, and durability, combined with light weight. Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and polyester resin are the most common materials used in the pultrusion industry due to their exceptional performance, extremely low number of manufacturing defects in products, and low cost. The interesting mechanical properties of pultruded composites can be attributed to the fiber-matrix interaction, which is the result of the fiber orientation and the resin distribution. In fiberglass pultrusion, the following four different types of resin are normally used: Polyester, Vinyl Ester, Epoxy and Polyurethane.
